According to the American Idiot Songfacts, Billie Joe Armstrong was inspired to write this song after hearing a jingoistic Lynyrd Skynyrd song being played on his car radio, whilst driving to the studio. Not just Bush messing up the world; American (and I'm afraid some British) idiots that fall for the media-driven "information age of histeria" and thereby become one (or sadly two) "nations controlled by the media". The song captures the decade as well as The Beatles' "All you need is love" captured 1967.

Surely, this has to be the Song of the Decade. That 'American Idiot' Bush has messed up the whole world! No other song represents the Noughties as well as this one.
