This song breaks my heart. It's not about love, it's about loss, hurt, insecurity and uncertainty. I find it so hard to listen to but can't bear the thought of never having heard it.

Possibly the best opening line I've ever heard in a song, and, surprisingly, the single version plays better than the album version, though whichever version you listen to is sublimely nutty, delicate and beautiful. Soft-ish rock it may be, but it still rocks.
