The hunt is on!

As soon as we decided that we were going to look for the Song of the Decade people have been asking me what mine is. I still can’t work it out! I’m getting closer but even with the power of an entire radio station at my disposal I haven’t yet nailed it!

We’ve been featuring certain months on the breakfast show and every one always throws up a song that I’d forgotten about. Then I start convincing myself that that song should be the song of the decade. I bet you’d forgotten about The Caesars and Jerk It Out? It didn’t even get in the Top 40 when it came out first time in 2003 but was a top 10 hit in 2005 when they re-released it. It’s been used in so many adverts since.

That did make me think that maybe the Song of the Decade doesn’t actually have to be a song that was massive in the charts. But then I also came across The Streets and Dry Your Eyes. That was huge in 2004 and that did get to number one. It’s still one of the greatest blokes break up songs. But then can The Streets really lay claim to having the Song of the Decade when you compare them to the big boys who have lasted the whole decade?

Coldplay have had four huge albums throughout the decade with ten different top ten songs in the UK. The Killers have also had the same amount of albums. I still love When You Were Young, their biggest hit in the UK. With that record behind those two bands, how could the song of the decade be from anyone other than them?

But then you can’t discount the guilty pleasures of Beyonce’s Crazy in love. I love listening to Gnarls Barclays Crazy on my iPod in the gym. That song helps me keep the fine OC body so how could I ignore it? And all this without even taking into account Elbow’s One Day Like This. It’s a really special song for me and Mrs OC and I guess for thousands of other couples too.

And here I was thinking that blogging about it might help me decide!
